Risk Factor High Cholesterol
Cholesterol is a fat-like substance made by the body and consumed in the foods you eat. There are two types of cholesterol that travel through your blood:
1. LDL “bad” cholesterol
2. HDL “good” cholesterol
Too much LDL can clog your arteries and veins so that your organs don’t get the oxygen and nutrients they need, while HDL helps transport cholesterol out of the bloodstream to the liver, where your body can remove it.
Fast Facts
- Diet and lifestyle can help manage cholesterol levels, but high cholesterol could also be the result of genetics.
- The higher a person’s total cholesterol, the greater the risk for heart disease.
- The healthy total cholesterol level range is less than 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/DL).
Foods containing plant sterols, eaten twice a day with meals, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.
